On October 30, 2019 at about 10:45 PM, the RCPD was notified that the Safe School Hotline had received an anonymous call from a person reporting that there was a rumor among Manhattan High School – East Campus students about wearing a safe color to school on the 31st to avoid being shot.
In response the RCPD launched an investigation and coordinated its efforts with USD 383 staff. Officer presence was increased at the East and West campuses.
MHS students and parents were notified of the situation by USD 383. As a result a significant number of parents elected not to send their children to school on the 31st.
RCPD’s investigation revealed additional information about the rumors concerning East Campus. This investigation continues. No arrests have been made on this case at this time.
In an apparently unrelated event:
During the course of RCPD’s investigation it was also revealed that an MHS West student had posted a picture of himself on social media while holding what appeared to be a firearm. The photograph included a menacing statement. Detained for Criminal Threat was Conner W. Bruce, 15 years of age, from Manhattan, KS. Bruce was transported to the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Facility where he is being held as of the time of this writing.
Although RCPD’s investigation continues, it has not revealed any other credible threats to students or staff.
