Director Bradley J. Schoen announced today that a team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will arrive Monday, December 3rd, 2012 to examine all aspects of the Riley County Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services. Verification by the team that the Riley County Police Department meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to maintain accreditation – a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence, Schoen said. The Riley County Police Department received its initial accreditation from CALEA in 1991, and was re-accredited in 1996, 2001, 2003, 2006, and again in 2009, at which time the received the prestigious award of being a Flagship Agency. The Riley County Police Department takes great pride in being the first Kansas Law Enforcement agency every accredited.
As part of the on-site assessment, the department employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Wednesday, December 5th, 2012 at the City Commission Meeting Room, located at 1101 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS. The session will begin at 6:30 PM and continue until all individual’s present have an opportunity to provide comments.
If for any reason an individual cannot speak at the public information session, but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team, they may do so by telephone. The public may call (785) 565-4183 on Tuesday, December 4th, 2012 between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Telephone comments, as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA standards. A copy of the standards is available at the Riley County Law Enforcement Center. The Riley County Police Department has to comply with 480 standards in order to gain accredited status, Bradley J. Schoen said. “The bottom line, Accreditation recognizes professional excellence. The Riley County Police Department is a professional agency, staffed with quality personnel. For these reasons, we will continue to work together to maintain accreditation and be a Law Enforcement Agency for others to emulate.”The Accreditation Manager for the Riley County Police Department is Suellyn Hooper. She said the assessment team is comprised of law enforcement practitioners from similar but out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, conduct individual interviews, and visit officers and other locations where compliance can be witnessed. The assessors are:
Team Leader: Captain Jeffery Pierce, Oklahoma City Police Department
Team Member: Lt. Robert Sanders, Garden Grove Police Department
Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accredited status, Suellyn Hooper stated.
Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
