On November 16, 2012 at approximately 2115 hours a vehicle/pedestrian accident occurred in the 400 block of N. 11th Street Manhattan, Kansas. On scene investigation revealed that Black 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by 18 year old Matthew VanHorn of 1525 Oxford Place #9, MHK was southbound in the 400 block of North 11th Street when it collided with 26 year old Kevin Wallpe of 430 Osage Street, MHK as he ran west across 11th Street from an alleyway.

Director Bradley J. Schoen announced today that a team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will arrive Monday, December 3rd, 2012 to examine all aspects of the Riley County Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services. Verification by the team that the Riley County Police Department meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to maintain accreditation – a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence, Schoen said.

On October 5, 2012 at approximately 2359 hours the Riley County Police Department received a 911 call reporting a home invasion; the caller added a person may have been shot or stabbed.
Patrol Officers arrived at the scene located at the Chase Manhattan Apartments and learned a suspect disguised in a black mask and hoodie had fled the area. Patrol Officers secured the area and located an injured male who was transported by Riley County Ambulance to Mercy Hospital where he was stabilized and then transported by Life Flight to Via Christi in Wichita Kansas.

On Friday October 5th, 2012 the Riley County Police Department will conduct a DUI Saturation Patrol. Officers involved in the Saturation Patrol will be looking for signs of impaired driving and other traffic violations.
Motorists who show signs of alcohol and/or drug consumption will be evaluated and appropriate enforcement action will be taken.

Due to a rockslide along the west side of Tuttle Creek Blvd at the intersection of Casement Road, all southbound traffic at this intersection is being diverted. Northbound traffic can proceed as usual but southbound traffic on Tuttle Creek Blvd. is being diverted east onto Casement Road. Drivers should expect delays and would be best served to avoid the intersection. This closure began at approx. 0430 and will continue indefinitely.

On 09-16-2012 at about 10:00 PM a 34 year old male walked into the Mercy Regional Health Center with a significant cut to his mouth. Follow up investigation revealed that the male had been involved in at least one physical altercation at Bobby T’s, 3240 Kimball Ave, MHK on 09-16-2012 at 0210 hours. The male later awoke in a pool of blood in the laundry room of 3120 Heritage Lane and walked home.

On August 31, 2012 at approximately 11:00 p.m. and into the early morning hours of September 1, 2012 officers from the Riley County Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and the Kansas State University Police Department conducted a DUI check lane in the 2000 Block of Kimball avenue in Manhattan.

On August 31, 2012 the Riley County Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol will be conducting a check lane in the city of Manhattan to seek out and apprehend impaired drivers. The check lane will take place from 11:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m on September 1, 2012. The lane will be supported by the Breath Alcohol Testing Unit from the Kansas Highway Patrol. There will be 16 law enforcement officers participating in the check lane.
