On July 21, 2014 the Riley County Police Department along with the Manhattan Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 831 Colorado Street in Manhattan. This fire damaged an unoccupied residence and was ultimately extinguished by 6 fire apparatus and 17 firefighters. The fire was ruled by fire investigators to have been set intentionally.

The theft of copper and other metals, according to research by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), has been on the rise in the US since 2009. Victims across the nation are finding items like pipe, wire, tube, line, roof, and coil missing and likely sold by suspects in an attempt to make financial gain.
The Riley County Police Department has responded to and initiated investigations into several of these thefts in the Manhattan and Riley County area over the past years and is now seeking out victims who may have left these thefts unreported.

The following information is an update from a police activity post from the Riley County Police Department on July 9, 2014.
Police are currently looking for a custom built motorcycle that was taken without its owner’s permission. On July 8th, RCPD responded and address outside of Manhattan where a victim reported that sometime in July an unknown subject took possession of the motorcycle valued at $20,000.00.

On July, 17, 2014 at 1:00 PM, the Riley County Police Department will be hosting a Media Day for the purpose of focusing on TASER technology and its use in Riley County. RCPD will be inviting all area news agencies as well as a limited number of community members, due to size of venue, to join them in this two hour long educational experience.
During the event, RCPD’s TASER Instructors will educate participants on departmental training as well as the science behind TASER. They will also give a few participants the chance to experience an exposure to the electronic control device.

At approximately 4:30 PM on July 10, 2014, the Riley County Police Department located Arayah Gauna, 16, of Manhattan, Kansas. The teen was announced as missing earlier in the afternoon after being away from her home for over 24 hours. Police located Gauna in the 1500 block of Humbolt Street in Manhattan and confirmed that she was unharmed and was not in danger. She was transported to the Riley County Police Department shortly after being located and was then reunited with family. The juvenile was removed from the missing person/juvenile runaway database late this afternoon.

The Fourth Annual RCPD vs. MFD BBQ Competition will take place this Saturday (July 12, 2014) during the Relay for Life event held in the Manhattan City Park. Each year the two emergency services agencies pit members against each other in pursuit of perfectly smoked and barbequed pulled pork, chicken, and ribs.

Emergency crews including the Kansas Highway Patrol, Riley County EMS, and the Riley County Police Department responded to a fatal collision near the 102 mile marker of Pillsbury Drive in Riley County. This collision involved a cyclist and a Dodge pickup truck which had collided, leaving the cyclist, Mark Jilka, 49, of Manhattan deceased.
The Riley County Police Department is documenting the incident in order to present it to the Riley County Attorney’s Office for review. No arrests have been made at the time of this release.

It is with great pride that the Riley County Police Department announces the induction of RCPD Administrative Captain Tim Hegarty, into the Evidence-Based Policing Hall of Fame. This nomination and induction comes after his integral role in forming what is now the department’s use of evidence-based policing strategies.

The Riley County Jail is using new technology to help inmates receive funds from friends and family during their incarceration. A new kiosk located in the lobby of the Riley County Police Department is now being used to make these money transfers more efficient. Beginning in April 2014 corrections officers began using this kiosk and have since stopped accepting money orders for inmates.

On June 21, 2014 beginning at approximately 8:00 AM, the Riley County Police Department and officers with the Union Pacific Police Department will be enforcing railroad related traffic laws in the Manhattan and Riley County area.
