MANHATTAN, KAN. - On Friday April 26, 2013, Riley County Police Department will be conducting a Tweet Along to showcase a day in the life of one of their police officers. RCPD has participated in several of these Tweet Along events over the past several months and has received positive feedback from the community.

March 25, 2013

During the week of March 17, 2013, Riley County Police Department attended a conference presented by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in Charleston, South Carolina. The Department, for a second time, was recognized for “outstanding performance” and received honors.

March 6, 2013

On Saturday March 9, 2013, Riley County Police Department will be holding several media briefings detailing the activity of Fake Patty’s Day 2013. Public Information Officer Matthew Droge will be holding briefings at 1:00PM, 5:00PM and 7:00PM on this day at the Event Command Post, located near the Larry Norvell Band Shell in City Park, Manhattan, Kansas.

February 16, 2013

On 02-16-2013 at about 0452 AM two armed men entered the Hilton Garden Inn located at 410 S 3rd St, Manhattan, KS and demanded money from a clerk. There were no reported injuries. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken.
Suspect #1 was wearing the following:
A dark grey sweatshirt with a picture of a tiger on the front (possibly with a hood). The tiger emblem could possibly be “Mike the Tiger” from LSU.Dark grey sweatshirt could be the style of the sweatshirt 
Dark Dickies Brand work pants.

January 5, 2013

On January 5, 2013 at approximately 0650 hours officers from the Riley County Police Department responded to an accident in the 5900 block of Anderson Avenue. Upon arrival the officers learned that a 1991 Oldsmobile 4 door passenger car being driven by 18 year old Jacob Brazzle of Manhattan, KS was traveling eastbound when it struck 71 year old Carl Schurle also of Manhattan, KS. Schurle was 
walking eastbound in the southbound lane of traffic when struck by the vehicle. Schurle was pronounced dead on scene. The accident investigation is still on-going at this time. 

December 20, 2012

Effective 12-20-2012 at 07:00 AM, the RCPD has entered into an emergency traffic accident response and reporting phase due to weather conditions.
Until further notice the RCPD will not respond to traffic accidents unless they involve road blockage or injuries. Additionally the RCPD will not take reports on most accidents during this time.
Drivers involved in accidents are advised to:
  • Remove yourself and your vehicle from the roadway
  • Exchange information with the other driver(s)

December 19, 2012

On 12-17-2012 between 10:34 and 10:44 PM a business burglary occurred at Grand Slam Sports located at 2007 Fort Riley Blvd, MHK. The incident was reported to the police by the owner of the business, 62 year old Michael Thompson.
Entry was gain by breaking the glass to the front door of the business. Damage to the door was estimated at $1,000.
Once inside the suspect(s) took the following items:

December 8, 2012

On December 8, 2012 at approximately 1:30 p.m. Jessica Farmer, a 61 year old Manhattan resident, reported that she was attacked and that her purse was taken. Farmer described that she was struck with a blunt object while she was walking in the alley in the 900 block of Osage in Manhattan and the assailant then took her purse and fled. She described that the suspect was thinly built and approximately 5’8” tall. She described that the suspect was wearing a black jacket and a black hat. She was unable to provide the suspects race. Farmer was transported to Mercy Health Center by 

November 17, 2012

On November 16, 2012 at approximately 2115 hours a vehicle/pedestrian accident occurred in the 400 block of N. 11th Street Manhattan, Kansas. On scene investigation revealed that Black 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by 18 year old Matthew VanHorn of 1525 Oxford Place #9, MHK was southbound in the 400 block of North 11th Street when it collided with 26 year old Kevin Wallpe of 430 Osage Street, MHK as he ran west across 11th Street from an alleyway.
