Riley County Police Putting Accident Reports Online
for Public
Anyone involved in even a minor traffic accident knows the confusion,
frustration and hassle inherent in such an event, which includes
the effort required to obtain a copy of the accident report. In
order to reduce the inconvenience to those involved in traffic accidents,
the Riley County Police Department has implemented a new online
process to obtain copies of accident reports.
By employing cutting-edge technology provided by PoliceReports.US,
LLC, citizens and insurers can now access accident reports from
any computer through the Internet, eliminating the need to mail
in a request or travel to the police department. While accident
reports will still be available from the department's Records Section,
we are pleased to be able to offer the public the convenience of
using this new, easy, online method.
Starting today, accident reports (except fatalities) generated
on June 1, 2006 and after may be accessed at www.policereports.us.
To search for a report, enter either the report (case) number, date
of the accident, location, or driver's name. The report can then
be printed immediately, at home or at the office. Because this is
a self-service feature, available anytime of the day or week, members
of the public should expend less time and effort to obtain the reports
they need. The police department expects to realize significant
savings through a reduction in the time required to process the
many requests for reports received each year.
Electronic distribution of accident reports via the web will allow
the police department to be more efficient while providing a higher
level of customer service. In most cases citizens will be able to
obtain reports online the second business day following the accident
instead of waiting in line or spending extra on postage. In certain
instances reports may take up to 5 working days or longer to be
completed and processed, depending upon the circumstances of the
accident. The nominal charge for this on-line service is $3.00,
the same amount that is currently charged for a mailed report, and
is payable by major credit or debit account.
Copies of reports generated prior to June 1, 2006 may still be
obtained by visiting the Riley County Police Department Records
Section in person or by mailing a request to the below address (requests
for reports in this manner must be accompanied by a $3.00 fee per
report and, in the case of mail requests, a self-addressed stamped
envelope).
